Oil Recycling

You can do so much good by doing something so simple: taking your used motor oil to Smalley Automotive for recycling.

New Jersey's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery estimates that, each year, up to 50 million gallons of used motor oil are discarded improperly - and illegally - in the state’s storm sewers, rivers, lakes, garbage cans, even directly onto the ground. This dumping adds dangerous chemicals to our soil and waterways, including lead, zinc, chromium, arsenic, chlorides, cadmium, and chlorinated compounds.

Oil RecyclingAnd here’s another startling fact: it takes just one gallon of oil to pollute one million gallons of drinking water!

Oil Recycling: What You Can Do To Make a Difference

Many people still don’t realize that used oil can be recycled, but it’s true: used oil can be cleaned, re-refined and used again or processed into fuel oil.

So, if you change your vehicle’s oil yourself, please follow these simple steps:

1.    Drain the used motor oil into a clean, dry container, such as a used milk jug. Take care not to let water or any other vehicle fluids mix with the oil. Then, seal the container tightly to prevent any spillage.

2.    Remove the used oil filter. It may contain about 10 ounces of oil, so seal the filter in a heavy, self-locking plastic bag to contain the oil inside it. (Oil filters are also a good source of recyclable steel.)

3.    Take both the oil and the filter to Smalley Automotive. As a certified Used Oil Collection Center for the State of New Jersey, we dispose of used oil and filters properly and safely. When old oil is recycled, it can be made into new motor oil, saving energy and reducing the need to produce more motor oil from virgin crude.

Please be aware that we cannot accept used motor oil that has been contaminated with water, antifreeze, solvents, gasoline, or any other type of fluid.

Oil Recycling Makes Good Sense for New Jersey and You

Remember, the improper disposal of oil is illegal. With a little extra effort, you can go a long way toward keeping our ground and surface waters safe, and our environment healthier for all New Jersey Residents.
